Sure,
you probably know all about your parents and grandparents,
but what about your great-grandparents, your great-great- grandparents
and, perhaps, their parents and grandparents. And how about all those people
who share your last name? Did you ever wonder if and how you might be related?
Over the course of the past decade or so, it seems as though many Americans
have become discontent knowing that they are simply Americans. They want
to know more — where were their grandparents or great-grandparents from,
and how did they make their way to America? In short, they want to know
a little bit about their family history; they want to find out about their
genealogy.
If you’ve ever done even a preliminary family tree search, you have some idea how difficult it can be to acquire information on long-deceased relatives. Now imagine what it’s like when your family roots stem from a foreign country. You don’t read, speak or understand the language, and you really have no idea where to begin your search for information. Where do you turn for help?
You might consider paying a visit to the SNPJ Slovenian Heritage Center. The Heritage Center has several genealogy resources available for use, including family tree CDs and diskettes, and numerous informative genealogy publications. In addition to these useful tools, the Heritage Center also has access to Social Security records, an often overlooked — but truly invaluable — resource for genealogy research.
